Our History
KMC began operations in 1949 and our early years involved the construction of irrigation canals in both southern Saskatchewan and Alberta. Throughout the 1960s, KMC was instrumental in developing Alberta’s highways. In 1965, KMC completed the final leg of Highway 63, which provided year-round highway access into Fort McMurray. In the late 1960s, the company completed road and railroad projects in Grande Cache, Grande Prairie, and Peace River areas of western Alberta. Progressing north, KMC also completed highway work in the Northwest and Yukon Territories.
In 1973, KMC commenced work in Alberta’s oilsands sector. The company contracted to Canadian Bechtel for the development of the Syncrude site near Fort McMurray and in 1978 began working directly for Syncrude with a contract for overburden removal. KMC has been active on the Syncrude site since that time. In 1979, KMC commenced work at Suncor (Great Canadian Oil Sands) removing overburden and constructing haul roads. KMC has been involved in all of Suncor’s mines and is actively removing overburden, constructing haul roads and tailings dykes, and providing other mining services.
While still maintaining a presence in the oilsands projects, KMC became involved in other mining opportunities throughout western Canada. In 1981, the company operated a placer gold mine near Cassiar, B.C. During the project cleanup phase, KMC received a commendation from the government of B.C. for the environmental reclamation of the area. From 1982 to 1987, KMC worked on pioneering and developing the initial pits and haul roads for Quintette Coal in Tumbler Ridge, B.C. The company was also involved in overburden removal, train loading and reclamation activities. In 1998, KMC completed a major contract for pit reclamation activities, including relocation of sensitive materials and the re-contouring of mined areas at the Cameco Key Lake uranium mine site in northern Saskatchewan.
Throughout our history KMC has been known for its innovative and flexible approaches to any challenge that may be presented in a job.
