Suncor Operations
Location: Fort McMurray, Alberta
KMC first started working for Suncor Energy Inc in 1979. Since that time, a number of projects and equipment rental options have been provided to the client.
To undertake our current long-term mining contract with Suncor, KMC erected a semi-permanent maintenance and office facility at the Steepbank Mine site. This facility brings efficiencies to the operation by placing all job personnel in one office complex. Start-up meetings, training programs and the mine dry all operate under one roof allowing all employees to interact and serve as a team. The adjacent workshop allows for major maintenance activity on-site contributing to increased operating time and higher productivity.
We currently provide overburden removal capacity in Suncor’s Steepbank and Millennium mines as well as oversize removal for one of the Suncor plants. KMC equipment operates in conjunction with Suncor’s own fleet to meet long term schedules for pit development and ore removal.
In October 2006 KMC was awarded the haul road construction contract for Suncor’s North Steepbank Extension mine development.
Suncor South Tailings Pond Project
January - March 2005
KMC successfully completed removal of approximately 2 million cu. meters of muskeg from the South Tailings Pond starter dyke foundation area at Suncor’s Millennium Mine between 2005 and 2006. The starter dyke contained over 10 million cu. meters of material. KMC constructed the dyke using a combination of material hauled from the Millennium pit (up to 14 kilometres one-way haul) and material recovered from a borrow pit adjacent to the pond footprint. The dyke was constructed under strict geotechnical controls to ensure engineering compaction requirements were achieved within all internal zones of the structure. The construction program was signed off by Suncor Major Projects personnel in April 2006 after meeting all compliance standards.
