Syncrude Operations
Location: Fort McMurray, Alberta
KMC has worked at the Syncrude site continuously since 1973. We have provided overburden removal capacity, dyke and haulroad construction, rejects removal, muskeg removal, reclamation and equipment rentals throughout this period.
KMC was instrumental in the construction of the Syncrude site starting in 1973. We were involved with the muskeg removal for the initial boxcut and for the plant site area. The relationship with Syncrude matured and continued as KMC commenced overburden removal for Syncrude in 1978. Over 30 years later we continue to be involved in value-added mining activities for Syncrude.
In 1991, we constructed a major permanent administration / maintenance / warehouse facility on the Syncrude site. Major repairs to our truck fleet and support equipment are completed at this facility. As Syncrude expanded its mining operations to the Aurora site in 2001, KMC provided both overburden removal and equipment rentals for specific work programs.
During the long-standing relationship with Syncrude, KMC has completed work in most facets of oil sands operations from overburden removal to re-contouring of reclaimed land. Although overburden removal has been the primary job over the years, KMC has provided solutions wherever Syncrude requested assistance. We constructed the main tailings dyke and the southwest sand storage dyke at the Syncrude site. This included major muskeg removal programs at Base Mine and North Mine.
KMC has also provided resources to remove plant and dragline rejects, haul coke and aggregate and construct haulroads, overpasses and jetties. The rental of KMC equipment has also helped provide the company with resources necessary to keep their operation running on schedule.
